Write me in

What's too much to ask of a friend?

So, there's a long story, but basically my mom said I need to set up a will and power of attorney in case she and my dad are dead and I become incapacitated. It's a long stretch (knock on wood) but it could happen. There's some family money that I would need to have administered. She said, think of someone in your age group who you trust, would trust with your life and your money. There are only two people I can think of: my cousin Roger, and Adam.

My cousin has two small kids and I don't know if he would be willing to take on something like that. I would like to ask him, though. He's the most responsible adult I know, and he has a conscience that wouldn't let him do wrong even in the most tempting situations. I know he would be responsible and go by my wishes.

And then there's Adam. I trust him with my life, and I think if someone had to pull the plug on me he could do it (with a lot of hand wringing). He is my best friend, but what is too much to ask of a friend? That's a lot of responsibility. And he knows my family. He would have to deal with them around the money issue. I should just leave it all to him. That would be hilarious.

Anyway, I have to come up with something soon (she said). I want to talk to the family lawyer. I need to figure it all out, like who gets what of my grandparents in the event of my and my moms death. I mentioned writing a will to my dad and he started talking about all his books and what I should do if he dies. Ugh. I hope he never dies. One, because I love him, and two, because it would be a giant pain in the ass.

I hate death. But it's important to think of these things. I know Andrea is going to take the dog - she made that clear before - and Jennifer said she'd serve as dog backup. Hopefully I'll outlive that little bugger.

On a roll

I made it to another meeting today. I drove Ed to the airport and just decided to stop on the way home. It's one of those, "if the light is green I'll make the left and go to the meeting, but if it's red I'll make the right and go home." Light was green, so I went.

The guy who led had some serious issues going on in his life, but one thing he did reiterate for me from last night's meditation was that moment of pause. Instead of reacting immediately to something you have the opportunity to take a moment and pause, breathe, and reconsider your reaction. Instead of getting angry or hurt, you can just pause. I like that a lot. Jumping on the emotion and really investigating it's origins and if it's the appropriate reaction.

Andrea and her boyfriend are in town today, so it's off to guide them around the area and do some touristy stuff. Fun! I love exploring my own town.

Friends near and far

Sometimes I really miss where I used to live. Adam and I watched our show tonight and ate cookie dough out of the package. Andrea and I used to watch the same show and eat brownie mix from the bowl. Only I didn't get to cuddle with Andrea. I really love Adam. He's much fun to hang out with, and he's the best cuddler there is.

Michael was talking last night about the couch. You know how in Fight Club he buys his stuff and thinks, "Well, now I've got that covered. It's something stable in my life." Michael was saying that when I moved I took away his "couch." It's nice to be appreciated.

Do for others

So, I know no one but me reads this thing, so I'm going to tell on myself. It's good, don't worry.

My friend Andrea house sits a lot. She came to a house the other day, and the people said, oh, it's a little messy. Well, she took pictures of the kitchen, and it was absolutely disgusting. Every counter was covered in food and dirty kitchen supplies. It was really nasty. She works as an events manager, and had the biggest event of the year the next day. She was distraught.

During the event, she asked if I could go to the house and walk the dog. I got to the house, saw the kitchen, and immediately began to clean. I cleaned that thing top to bottom, removing caked on grime and grit. It sparkled when I was done.

That night, when she got home, she texted me and asked if it was clean when I got there. I said no, which was the truth. She texted back to say that the house cleaner must have been there and only cleaned the kitchen! It was nice to think that she didn't have to come home to that, and that she could relax in thinking it was someone whose job it was to clean that did it. I didn't want her to feel indebted to me for cleaning. And she'll never know it was the kitchen fairy who did it.

That feels nice.
